Randy L. Pleva, Sr., National President, Paralyzed Veterans of America

Abilities Expo is "HONORING"  The Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Join us Friday, March 28th at 11:00 am, as we kick off the show with our KEYNOTE SPEAKER, PVA National President, Randy Pleva, Sr.
Randy L. Pleva, Sr., was reelected to his fourth term as national president of the Paralyzed Veterans of America during its 61st Annual Convention in St. Louis, Missouri, on August 17, 2007. Previously, he served two years as national senior vice president and three years as national vice president. Pleva joined the Kentucky/Indiana Chapter in 1989. He later helped form the West Virginia subchapter. After chapter status was granted to West Virginia Paralyzed Veterans of America in 1992, Pleva was elected as its first president and national director. Pleva held these positions for eight years. For the past 11 years, he has served on numerous state and federal committees, either as a member of the board of directors or chairman. In 1998, West Virginia Governor Cecil H. Underwood appointed Pleva to serve as Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator. Pleva joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1971 and served with the Task Force Delta Unit in Southeast Asia. He was discharged in 1974 and became employed as a coal miner and United Mine Workers mediator. Pleva currently resides in Tad, West Virginia.

Wheelchair Football Rules
(Adapted from Flag Football)

*  -  Players - 6 vs 6
*  -  Field - 80 yards by 22 yards - 1st Down marker lines are drawn every 15 yards.
*  -  Time - 2 - 20 minute halves with 5 minutes for halftime
*  -  Scoring - Touchdowns = 6 points.  Extra Point (starting at the 3 yard line)  = 1 point (passing) or 2 points (running)
*  -  Tackling - 1 hand touch above the waist including the arm and hand.
*  -  1st Down - 5 downs to reach 15 yards for 1st down.
*  -   Penalties - NFL Rules apply.

American Institute of Indian Head Massage

Geraldine Scott, RN, MS, RD, NCTMB - Pathology Instructor will be back again providing free Indian Head Massages in their booth – 310, for all three days.

Indian head Massage is a fully clothed non-invasive therapy that is given while the client is seated in a chair or wheelchair.  Massage movements are applied to the upper back, arms, neck, scalp, and face. This simple yet effective technique relieves stress and muscle tension. The relaxation achieved is comparable to a full body massage. Stop by for a truly relaxing treat!!!

Abilities Expo would like to welcome back, the United Spinal Association who will be hosting sporting events on Saturday on Kids Day, Rugby and Sunday, Sports Clinics. United Spinal Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization. Their mission is to provide expertise, create access to resources and strengthen hope thereby enabling people with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D) to fulfill their potential as active members of their communities. 

Legsdontwork.com will be showcasing the ParaGolfer by hosting Chipping contests all three days at the events. The ParaGolfer, outdoor power wheel chair with stand-up function (drives around safely in an upright position) for all kinds of sports activities for people with disabilities.

XTreme Medical is sponsoring three days of Sporting events and games: Quad Rugby, Basketball, Tennis, Hockey, Football will be performed by some former and future paralympians.

The theme this year is, “Make it a Safe Kids Summer!” We will introduce an exciting new safety game called "Safe Kids Safety Zone" that will help to educate children and their parents about summer safety. The game will have five Activity Stations focused on the leading summer risk areas, which also will be highlighted in our Safe Kids Week summer safety report to the nation. They are:

RACING FANS UNITE! Visit Drive-Master and Accessible Racing booth 811

 
Accessible Racing's give NEW meaning to 'handicaping' in motorsports, developing a NEW market, with a NEW funding strategy. Physically challenged are invited to 'Arrive & Drive' a real NASCAR, modified with variable effort steering, electric gas & brake, and most importantly dual controls on the instructors side of the racecar for safety.

Future show car appearnces will have a newly devloped interactive road racing video game with hand controls, challenging able-body fans to compete head to head against physically challenged motorsports enthusiast on a level playing field. Game will be unveiled at NY Metro Abilities Expo in Edison NJ March 28-30.

Accessible Racing '08 series have begun scheduling with special oval tracks appearances in addition to select Sports Car Club of America and Porsche Club of America auto cross events. Now for the first time ever physically challenged thrill seekers can drive a racecar without buying a race team, or owning a racecar.

Accessible Racing '09 series plans to transition intrest from 'Arrive and Drive' to IROC style competition in spec cars. Accessible Racing will invite qualifyed drivers to road course and oval track events in addition to continuing autocross feder program.

Accessible Racing '10 series plan REALITY TV SHOW featuring able body and physically challenged race fans competing in the same car on the same course to crown an 'Undisputed Champion', just like the interactive game. Autocross and spec car competition will continue to feed the growth of Accessible Racing's Newest Version of The Fastest Growing #1 Spectator Sport...Stock-Car-Racing!
